Part 2: Entropy, Matter, and the Illusion of Speed

Part 2: Entropy, Matter, and the Illusion of Speed

The Youth of Electrons, the Fly’s Time, and Perceptual Synchronization

In case you missed it: This is the second part of the "Time Illusion" series. To explore the basics and the mental process, click here to read Part 1.

1. Entropy: A Universal Regulator

While entropy is often defined as "disorder," it is actually a mechanism of universal regulation. However, this mechanism does not treat everything equally. Entropy ages and destroys complex structures (the human body, a rock, or a star), but it cannot touch fundamental particles.

Subatomic Timelessness: The concept of "age" does not exist for an electron. An electron from the beginning of the universe is identical to an electron today. Entropy affects and transforms matter, but for pure energy waves or fundamental particles, the destructive arrow of time does not function. Time is not a resource; it is the way matter interacts.

2. Speed and Perception: Why Can’t We Catch a Fly?

The speed of time depends on the observer's mass, velocity, and biological processing capacity. Consider these examples:

  • The Fly Metaphor: A fly sees the world at a much higher FPS (Frames Per Second) than we do. A movement that is one-tenth of a second for us is a vast period for a fly. If a fly could reach a speed of 100,000 km/h, time would slow down so much for it that the outside world would turn into a frozen image.
  • Synchronized Stretching: Understanding that someone is about to yawn before they do, or a cat's lightning-fast reflexes, is related to "cerebral visual speed." The brain simulates possibilities before photons even hit the retina. "Now" is actually a construction of the future predicted by the brain.

Academic References & Parallel Theories

Wheeler-DeWitt Equation: This equation does not include a "time" variable in the wave function of the universe, suggesting that time does not actually move when looking at the universe as a whole.
Critical Flicker Fusion (CFF): A biological parameter that measures the speed at which animals perceive time, explaining scientifically why the fly is "faster" than us.
Ludwig Boltzmann: Through the statistical interpretation of entropy, he proved why the arrow of time only moves from past to future using probability calculations.
